In the community | Julia's House

Not everyone lives within easy reach of our hospices which is why our team will work wherever families need them – more than 65% of our care happens in homes or out and about in the community.

Our care has no boundaries. It goes way beyond the four walls of our hospices because to truly support families we know that our service needs to be flexible and quick to adapt. But future-proofing our care we are able to seamlessly continue supporting families.

Care at home

For many of our parents going anywhere can be an ordeal. Some children have such complex needs they cannot travel without an extra person in the car to keep them safe and every journey involves transporting heavy medical equipment.

Imagine having care that comes to you, that arrives on the doorstep so you can take a break. Parents can become so worn down with the worry and physical effort of caring that being able to go out for a few hours or even just go upstairs for a sleep can be the difference between a family coping or hitting crisis point.

Out and about

Our care sessions happen at Scouts, Brownies, swimming, in the park, in the countryside, at the cinema. Our nurses and carers go wherever they are needed.

This flexibility enables children and families to enjoy some of the simple pleasures which other people take for granted, like going to the beach. We are about making the most of life and creating opportunities for families to relax and make the most of the time they have together.

Neonatal care

When a baby is born with a serious medical complication or condition it can be a terrifying time for parents. Catching families early is critical. By supporting parents from the start and providing good crisis support we can show mums and dads that they are not alone, that Julia’s House is there for them.

We work closely with hospitals and health professionals to make sure they are aware of the services we offer. This is crucial part of making sure families are getting the right help, right from the start.

Transitioning into adult care

When a family has been supported by Julia’s House for many years it can be hard to let go. When young people reach 18 it is time to make the transition into adult care. We liaise and work alongside adult services making this process as smooth and efficient as possible so that everyone feels comfortable and confident.

We also encourage youngsters to become ambassadors for Julia’s House or get involved in volunteering. This helps them move on when the time is right but still feel connected to Julia’s House in a positive way.
